NYC and Broadway!
A friend of mine invited me to a NYC trip with her at the end of October. She’s a fellow actor (brilliant role in the recent movie Daughters of the Domino) and she won the lottery to purchase tickets to see Ragtime on Broadway. On a whim (and since she wanted to go with a friend) she asked me and I said “of course!”
I am a checker-inner of baggage and my friend is a carry-onner. So I decided to see if I could pack light enough for a few days in NYC without checking a bag. I was successful, for the most part. It was a lot to lug around but we did it. At the airport in Detroit, we ran into a snag with the airplane and we were on the tarmac for about a half hour while they fixed a door. That’s a bit unnerving, but ultimately it didn’t set us behind too much.
When we arrived in NYC, we found an Uber shuttle but we didn’t know that the shuttles aren’t required to drop you off at the door of your destination. Just “near it” so basically we got dropped off in one part of New York City and had to hail a cab to the actual location where we were staying.
We stayed at the Empire Hotel and it was a lovely experience. Right near the theater. We also decided to go the night before to see Laurie Metcalf in Little Bear Ridge Road, a new play by Samuel D. Hunter. We got to meet both Samuel and Laurie and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Highly recommend it if you get a chance to see it. We also stopped at a food vendor who claimed to have the best ice cream in NYC. So of course we had to try that, too!
Ragtime was wonderful and I hear it’s up for some nominations. Also a tear jerker and the music and lights were astounding. I had no idea I would become a Broadway show person after this? I never knew why people got excited about theater until I went to NYC and got to experience it firsthand.
We got an opportunity to go the MET and see some beautiful exhibits and of course there’s not enough time in the day to do it all. We gave it our best effort. Then my friend wanted to get some famous “street meat” from one of the vendors outside the museum so we got hotdogs/chili dogs and french fries from a food truck! One thing about NYC is the food can’t be beat. It’s amazing whether it’s from the street or from a fine dining restaurant.
Overall, it was a wonderful trip and a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. I’m so thankful for the friends I’ve met in life that open my eyes to new opportunities.
More to come about my trip to Salem that occurred THIS month.
Talk soon,
xoxo
